A highly original mix of poetry and prose tells the story of a young English girl’s life in South Africa. It was a time of immense change in the country.

Linda arrived at Johannesburg Airport in 1982. She was just eighteen and she had really, really not wanted to be on that plane. But her family were there to meet her with huge smiles, warm, happy hugs and bunches of flowers. She had gone to keep the family together.

In the years that followed, Linda experienced first-hand that white people kept black people at arms-length, subjugated. She didn’t agree but she fitted in. She learned the South African way.

She went to work, fell in love, got married, had two children. Then an amazing thing happened – apartheid ended. She and her family, along with most of South Africa’s population, had queued for hours to vote in the first ‘Free and Fair’ elections.
